The Autistic Haiku: May 17, 2013

Why Daily Haiku?

The haiku is a rule-bound poem from Japanese culture. It dictates not only the well-known form, 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables, but also demands a surprise twist and that the poem be about nature.
I, because of my autism, I think, have never been able to meditate, to clear my head enough to land at calm. Poetry is the closest thing that gets me to calm. Reading it and writing it.
And I feel our world is disconnected from itself, from nature, the base of the world. I want more connection to my earth.
And so, as an autistic who values rules and wants the benefits of meditation, I am attempting to pause in each of my full days, every day, to pen (always pen first) a haiku.

Don't worry; if you're one who has taken the haiku away from nature, I'll only judge you a small, little bit.
